Hidden Genova: 5 Places Locals Love That Tourists Miss

Genova is built vertically. The old city presses up against the sea, and behind it, layer by layer, the hills rise steeply — connected by funiculars, elevators built into the hillside, and staircases so ancient they're worn smooth by centuries of feet. This vertical geography is where Genova hides its best secrets.
Boccadasse: The Village Most Tourists Drive Past
Five kilometres east of the centre, Boccadasse is a small fishing village that was swallowed by the city decades ago but somehow retained its character completely. Coloured houses stacked above a small beach. Fishing boats pulled up onto the stones. A gelateria that locals say makes the best ice cream in Genova. The view back toward Porto Antico from the hill above the village is the one photograph that never gets taken.
Castelletto: The View Nobody Queues For
Take the Castelletto ascensore — a small public elevator built into the hillside — up to the Spianata di Castelletto. The terrace overlooks the entire city: the cathedral, the port, the sea, the hills on the other side. There's no ticket. No tour group. Just locals walking their dogs and a view that most visitors never find.
The Caruggi on Sunday Morning
Sunday mornings, the caruggi are almost entirely empty. The shops are shuttered. The light comes down between the buildings in long vertical strips. The only sounds are distant church bells and the occasional motorbike. Walk without a map. Turn toward the sounds you find interesting. This is Genova at its most honest.
Nervi and Camogli: The Coastline Locals Use
For swimming, locals take the train — 20 minutes from Genova Brignole station — to Nervi or Camogli. Small coves, clear water, no beach clubs, no umbrellas for rent. Just the Ligurian sea and whoever else had the same idea. Camogli has the better village; Nervi has the better walking path along the clifftops.
