Aperitivo in Genova: The Local's Guide to Evening Culture

There is a moment, usually around 6pm, when Genova transforms. The tourists head back to their hotels. The cruise passengers return to their ships. And the city — the real city — opens up.

This is the hour locals call aperitivo. And if you miss it, you've missed Genova.

What Is Aperitivo in Genova?

Aperitivo is not happy hour. It's not a deal. It's a ritual — a social institution built into the Ligurian way of life. From 6 to 8pm, bars across the city set out small bites of local food alongside wine, Campari, vermouth, and local craft drinks. You order a drink; the food is part of it.

Where Locals Go for Aperitivo

Skip the tourist waterfront and head instead to Piazza delle Erbe — a small square in the heart of the old town surrounded by unpretentious bars with tables spilling into the street. Via di Sottoripa, the covered arcade along the old port, has a handful of places that have been pouring local wine for decades. Piazza San Matteo is quieter, more refined, usually occupied by people who live nearby.

What to Drink in Genova

Order Rossese di Dolceacqua — a light red from the Ligurian hinterland that almost nobody outside the region knows. Or ask for Pigato, a white wine from the hills west of Genova with a slightly bitter finish that pairs perfectly with the sea air. If you want something stronger, Campari with soda is the local default.
