Five villages. One day. Which order do you visit them? This is the question that determines whether your Cinque Terre experience is a beautiful memory or an exhausting crowd-management exercise. The answer matters more than most travel guides admit.
The five villages run north to south along the coast: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore. Most visitors do them in this order because it's the same direction as the train. But that's also why the crowds build in exactly this sequence — everyone arriving at the same villages at the same time.
The Smart Order: South to North
Start at Riomaggiore, the southernmost village, early in the morning when it's nearly empty. Walk or take the short train ride to Manarola — arguably the most photographed village in all of Italy, and genuinely stunning before 9am. Continue to Corniglia, the only village perched on a clifftop rather than at sea level, reached by 377 steps from the station. By the time you reach Vernazza for lunch, you've been moving against the crowd flow all morning.
The Villages Ranked: What Each One Is Actually For
Monterosso al Mare is the largest and least characteristic — the only village with a proper beach, which makes it the most crowded in summer. Worth visiting but don't start here. Vernazza is the most visually complete village — a natural harbour, a castle, a church on the water, coloured houses stacked above. This is the one that justifies the journey. Corniglia is the quietest and the most rewarding if you make the climb. Manarola has the iconic photograph. Riomaggiore is the most liveable-feeling — less polished, more ordinary in the best sense.
Do You Need to Visit All Five?
No. If you have one day, do Manarola, Vernazza, and Corniglia. You'll see three completely different types of village, walk a section of the coastal trail, and avoid spending your entire day on trains. The Cinque Terre Card is still worth it for the trail access even if you skip two villages.
From No Vacancy Genova: Our Recommended Route
We suggest: early train from Genova to Riomaggiore, walk or train to Manarola for sunrise light, continue to Corniglia for the view, lunch in Vernazza at a restaurant without a photo menu, then the train back north. You'll be home in Genova before the late afternoon heat and crowds peak. Book directly with us at novacancygenova.com for the full day-trip briefing included with your stay.
