One of the most common questions we hear from guests at No Vacancy Genova: how do I get to Cinque Terre? The answer is simpler than most travel blogs make it sound — and the journey itself is part of the experience.

Cinque Terre is 90 kilometres south of Genova along the Ligurian coast. The five villages — Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore — cling to steep cliffs above the sea, connected by train, footpath, and ferry. From our apartments in Genova, you have three realistic options.

Option 1: Train — The Best Way to Go

The regional train from Genova Brignole or Genova Piazza Principe to La Spezia Centrale takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. From La Spezia, local trains run every 15-20 minutes through all five villages — the entire Cinque Terre stretch takes about 12 minutes by rail. A Cinque Terre Card (around €18-20 per day) covers unlimited train travel between the villages plus entry to the hiking trails. Buy it at the station or online in advance for peak season.

The train from Genova Brignole is usually easier than Piazza Principe for guests staying near the seafront. Check Trenitalia.com for timetables. The first trains depart before 7am — worth knowing if you want to arrive in Vernazza before the day-trip crowds.

Option 2: Car — Possible, But Not Ideal

Driving to Cinque Terre is technically possible but locally discouraged. Cars cannot enter the villages themselves — you park in designated lots above each village and walk down steep paths. In summer, the lots fill completely by 9am. The roads are narrow and the parking costs are high. Unless you're continuing elsewhere after Cinque Terre, the train is a significantly better experience.

Option 3: Ferry from Genova — The Scenic Choice

Seasonal ferries run between Genova and Cinque Terre from approximately April through October. The journey takes around 3-4 hours depending on stops, and the views of the coastline are extraordinary — this is the way to see the villages as they were meant to be seen, rising from the sea. Check with Consorzio Marittimo Turistico for current schedules, as they vary by year and season. It's a full day commitment but a genuinely memorable one.

Our Recommendation from No Vacancy Genova

Take the early train from Genova Brignole, arrive in Vernazza or Monterosso before 9am, walk the coastal trail south, eat lunch in Manarola, and take the afternoon train back. You'll have seen the best of Cinque Terre before most day-trippers arrive and be back in Genova in time for aperitivo. Staying with us directly means we can give you the current train times, trail conditions, and the specific spots worth stopping for — things no app will tell you. Book at novacancygenova.com.
